My base rate is $30 (Canadian) per hour for proofreading and basic copy editing and $35 per hour for stylistic and structural editing. I will tailor the depth of my work to your budget and requirements. Pages edited per hour will depend on the complexity of the project and the depth of editing you desire. The Editors' Association of Canada uses the following guidelines from Amy Einsohn's The Copyeditor's Handbook, Second Edition (University of California Press, 2006) for estimating the time to edit a project:

• Substantive, structural or stylistic editing of a difficult text: 2-4 pages per hour;
• Substantive, structural or stylistic editing of a standard text: 2-3 pages per hour;
• Copy editing a difficult text: 2-4 pages per hour;
• Copy editing a standard text: 4-7 pages per hour;
• Proofreading a difficult text: 4-6 pages per hour; and
• Proofreading a standard text: 6-9 pages per hour.

Note: For estimating purposes, a page is 250 words, calculated by dividing the total word count of the entire document by 250. The final invoice is based on the actual time spent editing, not on word or page count or number of revisions.
